What Are The Major Benefits From Being Certified?

By Dan Morrill

And why you are at it, also get a certificate in something techy along the way. Is college the right path to succeed? With all the layoff's and an economy still stuck in the downturn or at least struggling at a pseudo bottom, the question of college as a way to make it through the hiring process is something that you should be thinking about.

While I have a vested interest in people going to college, that is not what the thread is about; the thread is about what the potential earning power is for college graduates. You have seen the statistics; they are everywhere, that college grads earn more than people who do not have college degrees. I am not selling anyone a particular college, what I am looking at is the ability of a college education to get you in front of a hiring manager. With many companies looking for college degrees, this is the best time to try to find a college in your right price range, with the degree program that you want to follow.

One of the conversations I have been following over on FriendFeed is talking about going to college. College has been a huge benefit to me, and Louis Gray also points out that College has been a huge benefit to him, both on his personal blog, and in a thread started on FriendFeed (subscribe to me or Louis, we get into interesting conversations) as shown in the embed below.

@danielbru if you don't go to college, the wrath of us all will be upon your head. If I advise you in anything... it's _GO TO COLLEGE_.

Or do what I did - go to a college where you can challenge and get work credit out of classes. I only took about 2 years equivalent because I was able to prove I already knew the content of the courses I was taking. The rest I was able to take the final, prove I knew the content, or provide concrete proof I could pretty much educate the professors on what they were talking about because I was doing what they were teaching in real life. - Jesse Stay

And I graduated Suma Cum Laude, straight A's because of it :-) - Jesse Stay

Nice. I took a similar approach by only showing up to half of my classes to take the mid-terms and finals. But your way is better - you didn't have to do the rest of the assignments. - Mike Hartman

Yeah - I think it's stupid if you can already pass the finals to have to fake your way through the rest of the class. I'm a no BS type of guy. Why waste my time? The degree's extremely important, as are the grades, but it's all about strategy on how you get that degree and the grades. :-) - Jesse Stay

I really disagree with this, but it's late and man do I need the sleep. I have no doubt Louis has great intentions here, but this is a big big issue for an individual, and one that is not as clear cut as mainstream American culture makes it out to be. Perhaps I'll be around FF tomorrow to discuss a bit. (Note: I have a graduate level education but see the issue in a million colors, including the "just go to work, start a business" option) - Dave Johnston

I actually ended up getting more prepared for the business world from my activity at the student newspaper at Cal Berkeley than I did in many of the courses, but I think trying to jump from high school into "real life" is a big jump. Daniel specifically is a smart guy who is getting some great projects started, but I wouldn't want to see him get derailed. - Louis Gray
