SCDM Announces New Exam And Certification Record

By Doug Caverly

The Society for Clinical Data Management has been busy. First, the SCDM introduced a new version of its Certified Clinical Data Manager exam. Then, the organization certified what it describes as a high of 330 individuals.

Let's look at the fresh test first. "The exam is the result of seventeen months and 2,000 volunteer and staff hours incorporating changes within the industry since the exam's first iteration in 2003," according to a statement.

Also, "A team of experienced CCDMs wrote questions to assess competencies which were then subjected to rigorous technical and fairness reviews, as well as a review by an independent panel of industry experts. In June of 2008 over 200 candidates beta tested the exam before its final release." So this isn't a sort of rubber stamp challenge.

As for the large number of people who were certified, one possible explanation is that there was a buildup in demand. Since the SCDM is a nonprofit organization, its approval could carry a little extra weight.

Another possibility is that people are just seeking more certifications in response to the economic turmoil. Given all that's going on, it's hard for resumes to have too many (figurative) gold stars.

Anyway, there's a dose of IT certification news and an idea for you might want to do with any spare minutes that accumulate.
